Ever dream of sitting in a peaceful spot and soaking up beautiful views all around you? Sound like the perfect vacation? If so, you need to plan a trip to the small tropical island of American Samoa! This U.S. territory in the South Pacific may be tiny, but it packs a might punch when it comes to breathtaking views. While it is not difficult to find a good view in this little piece of paradise, some are better than others. Here are the 5 best scenic lookout spots in American Samoa.

#1 Blunt’s Point Lower Gun
Along the Blunt’s Point trail, there are two large World War II mounted on the side of the mountain. The first of these guns is about a quarter mile up the trail. This lower gun is at a fairly flat and open portion of the trail. This spot gives you 180 degrees of gorgeous ocean views, including a bird’s eye view of the harbor and Fatumafuti. The hike to the lower gun is not too difficult, so most everyone can enjoy these views. For an extra treat, pack a lunch and have a picnic at this popular lookout spot.
To find Blunt’s Point trail, look for a white laundromat just before you reach Samu’s gas station in Utulei as you head east towards Pago Pago Harbor. Next to this laundromat is the trailhead to Blunt’s Point. Follow the well-marked trail. When you reach the water tank, the trail is somewhat hidden, but go to the left at the fence. Once around the side of the tank, you will see the trail again.

#2 Old Naval Officers’ Quarters in A’oloau
To truly appreciate the unbelievable natural beauty of this island, head up the mountain to one of the best scenic spots in American Samoa in the village of A’oloau. At the top of the mountain, the road will curve to the left in front of a church. On your right, just before the church, you will see a concrete slab and one wall with arches. This is the remains of the old WWII naval officers quarters. Now, these arches frame a ridiculous view of most of the island. Standing here in the crisp, cool air, you can see the ocean, airport, golf course, and most everything else on the island.
From the main road, turn towards the mountain at Shin Mart in Pavaiai. Follow this road all the way up to the lookout.

#3 Turtle and Shark in Vaitogi
The best scenic spot in American Samoa to marvel at the fascinating power of the ocean is Turtle and Shark. This lookout on the rocky coastline of the village of Vaitogi gives you magnificent views along the length of the island. It is also an ideal place to sit and watch the waves crash onto the lava rocks. There is something peaceful about this dynamic scene that just draws you in. But be careful not to get too close to the edge or you might find yourself sucked into the ocean by those mighty waves. A good rule of thumb to remember is that if the ground is wet, the waves can reach you.

To find Turtle and Shark, leave the main road and head towards the airport. From the airport road, head west on the Iliili straightaway towards Vaitogi. Look for the Turtle and Shark sign on your left. Turn at the sign and follow the road to the ocean. As you reach the coastline, the road will curve to the right. There is a spot to park just after the road turns, to the right of the beach.

#4 Lookout Point at Lower Sauma Ridge Trail
The Lower Sauma Ridge Trail is located in the United States National Park of American Samoa. It is at the top of the mountain on the way to the village of Vatia. From the trailhead, you have splendid views in both directions. These views include stunning looks at Pola Island and the Vai’ava Strait.
Head east on the main road. Turn left at the 4 Star Store and start your climb up the mountain. You will know you have reached the Lower Sauma Ridge Trail when you see a spot to pull off the road at a small fale. Take in the views on either side of the fale. While this short trail offers more views further down, the best ones by far are from this scenic spot at the trailhead.

#5 Beach in Aunu’u
For a picture-perfect view of all of Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, head over to the nearby island of Aunu’u. From the beach, you can see almost the entire island. This view is what postcards and screen savers are made of! On a sunny day, your eyes can feast on the bright blue of the ocean against the rich green of the rainforest-topped mountains. There is nothing more tranquil than this scene.
Aunu’u is only accessible by boat. To get there, head east on the main road on Tutuila. Travel out to almost the far end of the island until you see a boat dock in Auasi. There is a small ferry here that will take you across to Aunu’u. The ferry cost $2 each way and is about a 20 minute ride. Please note that the ferry will not run if the weather or waves are too rough.
