Planning a trip to Colonial Williamsburg for your family? To experience the best the area has to offer, you should plan to eat at least one meal at one of the historical taverns. And the best of the bunch is Christiana Campbell’s Tavern. Find out why it is such a great place to eat in Colonial Williamsburg.

The Story Behind Christiana Campbell’s Tavern
Christiana Campbell’s Tavern is one of a handful of taverns and restaurants that are actually inside Colonial Williamsburg. It has been around for hundreds of years.
In fact, George Washington frequently ate at this tavern back in the 1700’s. He loved the flavorful seafood that was served here. Nowadays, you will still find lots of seafood options on this historically-inspired menu.
How fun is it to sit down to a delicious meal while imagining that George Washington and his friends could have been sitting at the same table eating the same meal hundreds of years before you!?!?
During our trip to Colonial Williamsburg in November 2022, we ate Thanksgiving dinner at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern. It was such a wonderful experience! Talk about an iconic place to have Thanksgiving dinner! We really enjoyed the historical atmosphere of this place.

The Food
So, what can you expect from the menu which is heavily influenced by the dishes of the 18th century?
The dishes at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern includes seafood options such as oysters on the half shell, salmon, cod, fried lobster, seafood chowder, and crab cakes. Other dishes on the menu are fried chicken, steak, and potato dumplings.
One of the best parts of any meal at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern is the spoon bread! This is a recipe that has been used here since the beginning. It was adapted from one they received from the native Americans.
And let me tell you: it is absolutely delicious! It was one of my favorite parts of the entire meal! I could have eaten an entire pan of it!
Desserts here include things like flourless chocolate tortes, fruit tarts, and bread puddings.
On holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, the restaurant serves a special pre fixe multi-course meal.
The food here is not what you will get at a modern fine dining restaurant. Instead, it is food that you could see being served back during colonial times. It is humble in its presentation, but it is so heavenly to eat!
