Planning your first trip to Disney World? Did you know that it has its own transportation system? This is really not surprising, when you think about it, considering that Disney World is about the size of San Francisco. But, it can be overwhelming for first timers. To help you get where you want to go quickly, here are some tips to easily use Disney World transportation.
- Tip #1: The fastest way to get to the Magic Kingdom is with Disney transportation.
- Tip #2: You can’t go directly from one resort to another.
- Tip #3: You can use Disney World transportation before park opening.
- Tip #4: You can use most Disney World transportation for free.
- Tip #5: Minnie Vans are fast, but they will cost you.
- Tip #6: The easiest way to get to Disney Springs early in the day is from a resort.
- Tip #7: You can walk to a few parks from a few resorts.
- Tip #8: Expect to wait for transportation no more than 20 minutes.
- Tip #9: You need to fold up your stroller to ride on the Disney buses.
Tip #1: The fastest way to get to the Magic Kingdom is with Disney transportation.
Unlike the other three Disney World parks, the Magic Kingdom parking lots are actually on the opposite side of a lake from the park. This means that if you drive, are dropped off, or take a non-Disney shuttle, you will have to go to the Transportation and Ticket Center and then take a ferry or monorail to the park.
However, if you use Disney World transportation, such as a boat, bus, or monorail from a Disney resort, you will be dropped off right outside the park gates. You will not have to go to the Transportation and Ticket Center first.
Therefore, the fastest way to get to the Magic Kingdom is by using Disney transportation. So, if you are staying at a Disney resort and want to go to the Magic Kingdom, using Disney transportation is easier than driving there yourself.
Tip #2: You can’t go directly from one resort to another.
For the most part, you cannot go directly from one resort to another while using Disney World transportation. Instead, you will have to go to either a park or Disney Springs first.
So, if you are staying at one Disney resort but want to go to another for dinner or to just check it out, you will need to go to one of the parks and then to the resort of choice from there. I would recommend going to a park and not Disney Springs to get there because it typically is faster.
There are, of course, a few exceptions to this.
You can get to the Contemporary Resort, Polynesian Village Resort, and Grand Floridian Resort on the monorail without going to any of the parks.
You can also go between the Beach Club Resort, Yacht Club Resort, Boardwalk Inn, Swan and Dolphin Resorts by walking or taking a boat without a stop at a park.
Additionally, you can get between Pop Century Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort, Art of Animation Resort, and the Riviera Resort by either walking or using the Skyliner.
Tip #3: You can use Disney World transportation before park opening.
The buses, boats, skyliner, and monorails start running approximately two hours prior to the parks opening. They run continuously throughout the day. They stop running about an hour after each park closes.
This means that if you have an early morning breakfast reservation in a park restaurant, you can use Disney World transportation to get there. You can also use it to get back to your resort if you do some shopping after the park closes.
If you are worried about getting to the park for an early morning reservation, check with the Cast Members at your resort the night before to make sure.
Tip #4: You can use most Disney World transportation for free.
One of the perks of staying at a Disney World resort is that you can use Disney World transportation throughout your entire trip for free. Of course, you can use it even if you are not staying at one of their resorts. But you will still have to get yourself to and from Disney World property each day if you stay off property.
You can get anywhere on property on the buses, boats, monorails, and Skyliner without having to worry about paying to use them. This is one small way to save a little money on your Disney vacation.
Tip #5: Minnie Vans are fast, but they will cost you.
Minnie Vans are a part of the Disney World transportation system, but they are a little different from the other modes of travel. These function very much like Uber, but only on Disney World property. In fact, you can book a Minnie Van on the Uber app.
Unlike the other methods of transportation offered by Disney, you will have to pay to use the Minnie Vans.
The one difference between Minnie Vans and regular Uber is that most of the Minnie Vans have car seats in them. This is very helpful if you have little ones that still need to be in car seats.
If you need to get somewhere on Disney property quickly, Minnie Vans are definitely the fastest way to do it. They will prevent you from having to wait on the other modes of transportation.
Tip #6: The easiest way to get to Disney Springs early in the day is from a resort.
Unfortunately, you can only go directly between Disney Springs and the parks after 4 pm. Before that, you will have to go to one of the resorts first. Then, you can catch a bus or boat to Disney Springs from there.
This is important to know if you are wanting to go to Disney Springs early in the day to shop or eat.
All of the resorts have buses to Disney Springs. A few of them have boats to Disney Springs too. These include Port Orleans Riverside, Port Orleans French Quarter, Saratoga Springs, and Old Key West.
Tip #7: You can walk to a few parks from a few resorts.
Most of Disney World is spread out too far to walk between places. But there are a few resorts that are close enough to one or two parks that you can walk to them.
You can walk to the Magic Kingdom from the Contemporary Resort or the Grand Floridian. While it is a much longer walk, you could theoretically walk from the Polynesian to the Magic Kingdom too.
You can walk to both Epcot and Hollywood Studios from a few resorts. These are the Boardwalk Inn, Beach Club Resort, and Yacht Club. You can also walk to these two parks from the Swan and Dolphin hotels.
Tip #8: Expect to wait for transportation no more than 20 minutes.
For the most part, you can expect to wait for Disney World transportation for no more than 20 minutes. The buses and boats typically come within 20 minutes. The monorail and Skyliner are usually much quicker than this.
Occasionally, of course, there will be delays that will cause you to have to wait longer than 20 minutes. This can happen, most often, during the rush at the end of the night at each of the parks when everyone is trying to get back to their resorts.
Finding yourself waiting more than 20 minutes? Check the screens at the bus stops to see how soon the next bus is expected to arrive. If this is unacceptable or if it doesn’t give you any information, then talk to a Case Member.
Waiting for a boat, monorail, or the Skyliner? Check with a Cast Member if you have been waiting for longer than 20 minutes. There should be a Cast Member close by. If you are at a resort, go talk to one at the front desk.
Tip #9: You need to fold up your stroller to ride on the Disney buses.
Have little ones who need a stroller? Please note that you will have to empty and fold up your stroller in order to board the Disney buses. So, I recommend doing this while you are waiting for the bus to come instead of waiting until time to board.
You can take your stroller on the monorail or Skyliner without folding it up. In fact, your child can stay in it during the ride.
In my experience, the boats are hit or miss. Sometimes we have been able to keep our son in the stroller while on a boat. Other times, we have had to take him out and fold up the stroller before boarding a boat.
