The History of the Read House
The Read House is a historic hotel that originally opened in 1872. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the longest continuously operating hotel in the southeastern United States.
Throughout its long history, the hotel has played host to a variety of famous people and witnessed some big events.
In 1884, Grover Cleveland celebrated being elected as president of the United States at the hotel. Coca-Cola was first served at the hotel’s drug store in 1904. Winston Churchill and his daughter stayed at the hotel in 1932.
Ronald Reagan, while governor of California was a guest of the hotel in 1968. Richard Nixon, Theodore Roosevelt, and Elvis Presley also spent time at the hotel throughout the years. More recently, Oprah Winfrey and Gary Cooper stayed here.
During the early 1930’s, Al Capone was kept here while in federal custody during his trial. Iron bars were added to the window in Room 311, where he was housed.
The Rooms at the Read House
There are two types of rooms at the Read House: Tower rooms and Manor rooms.
The Tower rooms have an art deco design, lots of historical touches, high ceilings, and custom bathrooms. They are located in the historic tower of the hotel. These rooms will definitely take you back in time!
The Manor rooms, on the other hand, are in the manor part of the hotel. They are more modern in design, focus more on comfort than stylishness, and feature a mixture of prints throughout the space. Additionally, they offer views of downtown Chattanooga.
The Location of the Read House
Read House is conveniently located in downtown Chattanooga. The hotel’s address is 107 West MLK Blvd. You will find that the hotel spans the entire length of the block, between Chestnut and Broad Streets.
The location of the hotel is one of the best reasons to stay here. It is located just a few blocks down the street from the Tennessee Aquarium, the Walnut Street Bridge, and the Creative Discovery Museum. Additionally, it is conveniently located a short walk from numerous restaurants, including Mellow Mushroom.
Another plus of this location is that the “Umbrella Alley” is tucked away just behind the hotel. This cute little photo op is a fun hidden gem of Chattanooga!

Yet, it is far enough away from all the action that you still get some peace and quiet, which is necessary when you have little ones!
Additionally, this is a beautiful hotel. Staying here will make you feel so special! This is a huge benefit when traveling with your kids. It’s like a little treat for yourself!
The service you get from the staff at the Read House is amazing. Their attention and hospitality add to that special feeling that you get from staying here.
Another reason you will love staying here with your kids is that they have a fairly large indoor pool. This means that your kids can go swimming, no matter the weather! And because of its size, you won’t feel crowded if other families have the same idea at the same time!
The history of the Read House and the long list of famous people who have stayed here is another awesome reason to stay here with your kids. It is a fun conversation starter that can make it easy to connect with your kids.
Throughout the hotel, you will find a lot of fun historical touches, like phone booths. Your kids will enjoy discovering these little details. And you will enjoy teaching them about how things used to be back in your day!
